The ACHILE (Augmented Capability for High End Soldiers) project has recently reached a significant milestone by successfully passing its Critical Design Review (CDR). Funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF21), this strategic initiative is dedicated to substantially enhancing the capabilities of European dismounted soldiers, with particular emphasis on survival, sustainability, mobility, lethality, and observational skills.

On 25th February 2025, the review took place in Erding, hosted by WIWeb, with exceptional technical coordination provided by Rheinmetall. This phase marks the completion of the initial two-year period, during which the teams developed an open architecture based upon GOSSRA (Generic Open Soldier System Reference Architecture). Throughout this period, numerous disruptive technologies have been integrated, laying robust foundations for advanced soldier systems of the future.

The ACHILE project embraces a comprehensive approach structured around four principal domains:

  1. Core Soldier Capabilities: encompassing navigation, energy management, communications, training and simulation, mobility, protection, camouflage, and battlefield management systems (BMS).

  2. Enhanced Capabilities: focused on developing advanced functionalities to significantly enhance operational effectiveness across diverse environments and scenarios.

  3. Basic Equipment Interoperability: ensuring seamless integration of systems and equipment utilised by soldiers.

  4. Extended Interoperability: fostering compatibility and collaboration with additional military systems and technological platforms.

The ACHILE consortium, coordinated by Safran Electronics & Defence and technically guided by Rheinmetall, comprises 28 leading European entities from technology, defence, and research sectors. GOGOA Mobility Robots SL contributes its extensive expertise in robotics and exoskeleton technology, particularly enhancing soldier mobility and protection.

The forthcoming phase of the project will focus on prototyping, rigorous technical testing, and practical demonstrations, further advancing innovation in European defence.

Further updates on ACHILE and its forthcoming developments shall be shared in due course.

Reaching a Critical Design Review milestone shows the value of structured evaluation, risk awareness, and teamwork. Reading this made me think about how similar review frameworks could be discussed in level 3 health and social care learning. Could Orvantaopencollege encourage students to reflect on design reviews as parallels to care planning processes?
